Cristo Rei – this is Lisbons version of Brazil’s giant Jesus statue. The views from the top of the monument are beautiful anf the gift shop sells a dazzling array of Cristo Rei and religious memrobelia.

Castelo de Sao Jorge – this beautiful castle built in the 15th century offers spectacular views of Lisbon and the ocean. It was also the royal famalies palace for two centuries. Entrance free.

Mosteiro dos Jeronimos – the monastery is built in the magnificent Manueline style. The amazing attention to detail combining Gothic forms and Renaissance style, is a must for architecture buffs. The monastery has been classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Museu National de Arquelogia – the National Museum of Archaelogy is installed in part of the Mosterio dos Jeronimos. It has a diverse collection on the stages of human development in Portugal. Closed Mondays.

Alfama – Lisbon’s medieval quarter was inhabited by the Visigoths as far back as the 5th century. The area has a charming village atmosphere and was the only neighborhood to survive the earthquake of 1755 intact.
